VMAR CAP 232 - Miss Oshkosh by Andrew MacKay

On a wet, soggy, Rakesmoor flying site, much like the paddy fields of Vietnam, John Dawson and I flew Miss Oshkosh, an ARTF CAP 232, to great success.

This was my first ARTF, which, incidentally I think are great value for their price. The weather was not brilliant with a grey sky. It took to the air, flew straight as a die and did not need a lot of trimming in the hands of John. The old Super Tiger 90 on a 14x7 prop was purchased from Model & Hobby World, Lancaster (Andy’s) and has more than enough power to fly Miss Oshkosh on half power. There is power to spare! The kit comes complete with pilot in canopy and the instruction book which is quite easy to follow from stage by stage. The engine mount is aluminium and pre drilled with tapped holes for any engine.
Using a Super Tiger 90, and with all the radio controls in place, the CG was too far to the rear so a fair amount of lead was used and attached inside the large cowl with no problem. The kit comes complete with the air frame, wing, tail feathers, fin and rudder, covered and decals applied. A durable undercarriage is included. Wheels are also supplied. Spats are already painted ready for fitting. The silencer is to the choice of the individual, but a “Pitts” type or “Dustbin” type are preferable if you don’t want to cut excess out of the cowl. By now Miss Oshkosh was trimmed and it was my turn to take control. I found it very smooth and responsive to my flying, but no heroics for now. With rates on elevator and aileron she flies very well. Next time I fly it, I hope for a sunny day with blue sky and light winds. I am looking forward to that.

Many thanks to Andrew MacKay for the review.
